It’s official: we’re hooked on broadband

Bummed by reports about digital divides or the United States ranking twentieth in broadband penetration? A new study released on Tuesday by the Internet Innovation Alliance presents a far more optimistic picture of high speed Internet use in the US.
“The Substantial Consumer Benefits of Broadband Connectivity for U.S. Households” suggests that, whatever hurdles remain, broadband has had a dramatic impact on the economy over the last seven years. Among the survey’s findings: in 2008 over 66 million US households glommed onto broadband—that’s six times the number using it in 2001. And at the same time dialup usage is dramatically declining; there were only 10.5 million dialers in 2008, down from 44.2 million in 2001.
