Microsoft is in preliminary talks with the European Union’s antitrust commission about settling two probes into whether the software giant abused its monopoly status in Europe, according to a Bloomberg report which cites unnamed sources. The company wants to resolve the cases, one over its Internet browser and a second investigation into its word processing and spreadsheet software, before the EU imposes sanctions and before EU Competition Commissioner Neelie Kroes leaves office. It is not clear what either side is offering for settlement.
